Waikawa Dive Centre offers you professional dive training in a relaxed style. We also do eco dive trips within Queen Charlotte Sound and wreck dives, including the Mikhail Lermontov cruise ship wreck in Port Gore, in the outer Marlborough Sounds region.
We have a full retail shop and hire dive gear. Our water temps are about 13-18 degrees Celsius so a wetsuit is required. Our hire suits are warm, 7 mm two piece quality suits.
There is plenty to see in Queen Charlotte Sound, with a coastline of more than 40 km, and many little bays on either side. Pulling into a bay you will hear native birdsong, and there are often Little Blue penguins, dolphins, seals, and seabirds to see on the way out. Lucky students have also seen Orca while dive training.
Oh, and by the way, snorkellers and non-diving companions are welcome too.
Picton has two marinas - Picton Marina and Waikawa Marina. We're located on 16 Marina Drive - off Beach Rd or the road to Waikawa Marina. If you came on the Ferry, you go through the roundabout in the centre of town and go straight onto Waikawa Road. If you take the lower roundabout around the water front, you will need to turn left onto Waikawa Road. The Waikawa Marina sign will help you from there.
Planned dive training & dive trips or bookings are shown here; we can arrange a booking for your group outside these times with advance notice if you prefer. The WDC calendar includes all NZ holidays for planning purposes. You may click on a calendar in the key to disable it and only see events that interest you. Initial training is usually done in the pool, and further training may be shore or boat-based. We look forward to your booking - and if you are travelling by cruise ship we can transport you the short distance to our dive centre and back with some notice.
Please note that events are subject to change due to unforeseeable circumstances. Marine weather is important especially for the Mikhail Lermontov trips.
Location is Double cove, and involves swimming with and feeding the fish (within reason!). All gear can be provided, but please bring your own gear if you have it (there is no discount for this however). Transport to Double Cove is by boat. Learn how to snorkel; ~ one hour time in the water. Parents are welcome. Snorkelers $40 each, parents $10. Must prepay before the trip. Departure time is the time the boat will leave the marina. Please allow one hour fit up if you don't have your own gear and be at the dive centre at least a half hour before if you have gear. Around 3-4 hours total time.
Inner Sounds or local dives include all dive gear and two dives. Generally the Koi wreck and Double Cove. Finger food and drinks supplied. Allow one hour prior to departure for gearing up and loading the boat. Trip time total is about 5 hours. Please note that here is no discount for supplying your own gear. Snorkelling can be included at $180 (includes gear). Non-divers are welcome at $30 per person, provided there is room on the boat. Departure time is the time the boat will leave the marina.
